Centennial School District announces new Superintendent
The Centennial School District’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to hire James Owens as the district’s next Superintendent, effective July 1, 2021. Owens will replace Dr. Paul E. Coakley, who has been named Superintendent of Multnomah Education Service District.
Over the past five years, Dr. Coakley has worked collaboratively at the County Level, advocating for resources and creating policies that increased equity, funds, and stronger systems of support for students across Multnomah County. We wish him all the best in his new role where he will support school districts, leaders, and approximately 100,000 students across Multnomah County.
We are equally excited for Owens to lead Centennial School District toward future success. Owens currently serves as Centennial’s Assistant Superintendent/Director of Human Resources, a position he has held since 2016. Additionally, he was the Principal at Butler Creek Elementary School from 2012-2016 and an elementary school teacher in the Reynolds School District from 2005 – 2012. Owens is a graduate of Centennial High School himself (Class of 1997).
Additionally, Owens has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oregon State University and a master's degree in teaching and his administrator's license from Lewis & Clark College. He is passionate about serving our students and offering the best possible education to our community.
